Italy makes some of the world’s best-known ceramic tiles, sanitaryware and engineered stone, and every one of those products starts with a raw-material recipe that someone has spent time getting right. Changing a quartz supplier means changing an input to that recipe, which is why Italian buyers don’t switch casually. A new source has to prove itself on paper, in the lab and on the production line.
This page is written for the people who run that process: purchasing managers, technical and quality teams, and raw-material traders in ceramics, engineered stone and glass. It describes how a new quartz powder supplier is usually qualified, what to include in a request for quotation, and how to compare offers properly. Namakwala is a third-generation Indian mineral and salt exporter, and quartz sits alongside garnet and barite in its minerals range.
Most buyers follow the same five steps. Knowing them helps you plan your timeline.
You compare the supplier’s specification against your own limits. For Namakwala quartz the headline figures are:
If your limits are tighter than these, send them to us before you go further. A short conversation at this stage saves a sample round.
You ask for a representative sample in the grade and mesh you’re considering. Ask the supplier to confirm that the sample comes from the same material that would be shipped in a bulk order.
Your lab checks chemistry, particle size distribution and whiteness against its own method. This is the point where any gap between the supplier’s sheet and your measurement shows up.
A small production trial, such as a test body, a test batch of tiles or a test melt, shows how the quartz behaves in your own process. Results here matter more than any datasheet.
The first bulk order is treated as part of the approval. Many buyers check a second lot before moving to regular supply, to confirm the material is consistent from lot to lot.
A clear request gets you a clear quote. Include:
Item = Why it matters
Application (tile body, glaze, engineered stone, glass, filler) = Determines the grade we recommend
Chemistry limits (minimum SiO₂, maximum Fe₂O₃ and Al₂O₃) = Lets us match a grade to your limits
Whiteness requirement = Matters for visible surfaces
Mesh size or particle size distribution = Affects packing, melting and finish
Form (lumps, grains or powder) = Some buyers grind in-house
Monthly volume and lot size = Drives pricing and logistics
Delivery port and price basis (for example FOB or CIF) = Needed to compare quotes fairly
Documents you require = Certificate of analysis, safety data sheet, origin documents
This is a starting point only. Your technical team’s own recipe and limits always come first.
Application = What the buyer watches = Typical starting point
Ceramic tile and sanitaryware = Whiteness, iron, consistent fineness = Low-iron, higher-whiteness grade, finer mesh
Engineered stone = Whiteness, particle size mix, consistency = Grades and sizes matched to the formulation
Glass = Iron and overall chemistry = Low-iron, high-purity grade
Paints, coatings and fillers = Whiteness, fine particle size = Fine mesh, high whiteness
A price per tonne tells you very little until you know what it covers. Compare these across suppliers:
Your compliance adviser can confirm what applies to your import under EU rules, including REACH. Please check these with them and with your customs broker before shipping.
Quartz is crystalline silica, and fine dust must not be inhaled. EU workplace rules on respirable crystalline silica are strict, so use dust control, ventilation and suitable protection, and follow your site’s safety procedures. Ask us for safety documentation when you enquire.
Quartz Specifications
Property = Specification
SiO₂ (Silica) = 99% – 99.9%
Fe₂O₃ (Iron Oxide) = Below 0.03% (low-iron grades available)
Al₂O₃ = Below 0.5%
Whiteness = 85% – 98%
Mohs Hardness = 7
Mesh Sizes = 50, 100, 200, 300, 500 (customizable)
Forms = Lumps, grains, powder
Note: Specifications can be customized as per industry needs. Final grade is confirmed per order.
Italian buyers qualify a new quartz supplier carefully, and that’s sensible. A clear specification, a sample you can test and a quote you can compare on delivered cost give both sides what they need to start well.
